In a recent video, Gary Vaynerchuk (@GaryVee on twitter) briefly discussed the evolution and potential of people discovery applications by highlighting the buzz around a people discovery mobile app at South By Southwest. In context of Facebook’s success graphing social relationships and Tumblr and Pinterest’s success around interests, Gary said, ”a people discovery app is the next billion dollar play, even if it’s 36 months away.”
Gary pointed out the buzz around the people discovery app mirrored that of past recent innovations such as online dating and paying for goods and services via credit card over the Web. Just like those advancements became widely adopted and immensely successful over time, Gary said ”any application that breaks through and makes people discovery better has a chance to be the next big thing.”
While I couldn’t agree more with Gary’s sentiment around people discovery’s potential on the consumer side, I disagree this technology is 36 months away – people discovery applications for enterprise software that scale are already available. Today.
